Open with a 40 to 60 word answer block
What the scan checks: an AI judgment reads your first ~180 words of main content (navigation, header and footer are stripped first, so the count starts at your first real sentence) and confirms the page opens with a direct, self-contained answer block, not a story, a riff, or a slow warm-up. Four things are measured, not assumed:
- The answer exists in the opening. No answer is a fail.
- Its length. The target is 40 to 60 words; we warn outside a 30-to-80-word band and tell you the actual count.
- Every major section opens the same way. Once a page has three or more sections, at least half of them need their own standalone 40-to-60-word opening answer. Each section is retrieved on its own, so each one needs its own answer.
- Nothing breaks the block. A link or a pull-quote inside the opening answer means the chunk that gets lifted is not self-contained.
Why it matters for AI search visibility
Section titled “Why it matters for AI search visibility”When an engine chunks your page for retrieval, the first chunk (the first ~180 words after nav and header are stripped) has the highest semantic density for the page’s core query, so it ranks first and gets quoted. The chunk is the unit of citation. If your answer is buried under an “interesting opening,” the citation chunk is your throat-clearing instead of your answer. A tight opening answer block is the single highest-return content edit you can make, and unlike an SSR migration you can ship it this afternoon.
How to fix it
Section titled “How to fix it”Rewrite the intro to a 40 to 60 word block with three parts:
- Definition (15 to 20 words): plainly say what the thing is.
- Mechanism (15 to 20 words): how it works or why it happens.
- Stake (10 to 15 words): why the reader should care.
Example, answering “What is AEO?”:
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a site citable by AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. It works by structuring content into extractable, well-attributed chunks that models lift directly into answers. Brands that ignore it disappear from the moment buyers ask an AI about their category.
That block is self-contained, embeddable, and citable: a bot that chunks the page has one chunk that completely answers the question. Do this for the page intro, and ideally open each major section the same way. Do not break the block with a blockquote or image in the middle, or it splits across two chunks and neither wins.
